Silverlight was introduced back in Year 2007 as competitor to Adobe's Flash for building Rich Internet Applications. Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform implementation of the .NET Framework for delivering next-generation rich interactive media and content over the Web and for developing browser-hosted Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). Silverlight enables developers to build applications that significantly enhance the typical end user experience, compared with traditional Web applications. Although Silverlight and Flash target the same market but they are not similar in all respects. From a developers perspective Silverlight is more programmer-oriented whereas Flash is a little more designer/artist-oriented.
As Silverlight is for Web, WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) is for Windows Application. WPF replaces all of the old 'Windows Forms' and Win32 API. It builds on a vector based and GPU-enabled drawing framework (DirectX). WPF allows you to develop rich user experience applications that incorporate user interface (UI), media, and documents. Some features of .Net Framework are limited to WPF and are not available in SilverLight.
